The UTC Symphony will feature winners from the department’s annual Concerto Competition in a free concert.

The UTC Music Department Concerto Competition is a biennial event which allows any student enrolled in a UTC music department ensemble the chance to compete for an opportunity to perform as a feature soloist with the orchestra. The students perform for a panel of professors from the performing arts segment of the music department. This year five winners were chosen: Alan Shikoh (guitar), Zachary Cavan (baritone), Jay Parker (tuba), Daniel Spivey (tenor), and Johan Sentana (piano).
The concert will open with graduate conducting student Hyung Lok Kim leading the orchestra in Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture. Maestro Ahn will then lead the orchestra in the concerto winners’ selections which will include a Vivaldi concerto transcribed for guitar by UTC professor of theory and guitar Dr. Mario Abril, a movement of Vaughan Williams Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra in F minor, a movement from the Robert Schumann Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 54, and two arias, “Non piu Andrai” from Mozart’s Le Nozze de Figaro and “Salut’ demeure chaste” from Gounod’s Faust.
The UTC Symphony is the most advanced orchestral ensemble at UTC. Its educational purpose is to provide a pre-professional experience for applied music and music education majors and for musically talented students majoring in other fields. It is led by Maestro Jooyong Ahn, who has held the music directorship of orchestras in Korea and the United States and guest conducted many orchestras on three continents, and who has been a tenured professor of conducting at three universities before coming to UTC.
